Filming, Trade Shows, & Coming Back

Filming

Finally did some filming a couple weeks ago and it felt great.

I went out with Son-in-Law Sam and my buddy Wayne and we shot a bunch of book promotions and a couple of trailers for my films to post on my Vimeo On-Demand channel.

It’s been a long time since I’ve filmed anything and although I keep saying I need to get back into it I never seem to make the time.

Do I have things I wish to shoot? Absolutely.

Do I feel out of practice? Very much so.

Trade Shows

Last weekend I went to the NW Lens Summit and the Mini Gear Expo to look around at some of the new things that are available and to hopefully run in to old friends.

I did see a few old friends but mostly I saw a lot of people I didn’t recognize (and I’m not going to say anything about how young they all seemed to be… but time passes when we’re not paying attention.).

All of the new equipment technology is amazing. I keep up on post-production technology, software, and apps, but not the production stuff.

There was a guy there with a huge book on lenses and lens technology that he and another fellow had written.

Like an idiot I told him I still had my American Cinematographer’s manual from 1980. He told me he had a complete set going back to the earliest versions in the mid 1930’s.

I’m looking at all of these cameras and lenses and thinking back to when I was in film school and shot my first 16mm film on an old Bell & Howell DR 70.

Even though it was a lens show, there were a lot of very cool cameras as well. They were set up as part of the lens demonstrations.

Looking at all of this I felt lucky to have an older DSLR that a good buddy of mine gave me as he upgraded and doesn’t use it anymore.

Looking at all of the new lighting and grip equipment was also interesting. We have come so far.

And yet I still have a couple of 650 watt Moles and two 1000 watt broad lights that I bought off of some guy in the 1970’s for a hundred bucks.

Coming Back

Yes, I am probably a dinosaur when it comes to the gear but I still have ideas and stories to tell.

I also thought about how much fun I had shooting my book promos and trailers.

I have some other things I still want to shoot, and there is even a feature script or two that I still want to shoot.

These last two weekends made me realize that even though it’s hard work I still love what I do and I need to raise a few dollars and get back out there and make more movies.

And I will. It’s good to feel excited again.
